Slate Roofing in Richmond Heights, MO

A slate roof on a 1930s Tudor in Richmond Heights is a century-long investment, and the wrong crew can ruin it in an afternoon. Cracked slates and rusted nails show up fast on steep rooflines. After the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado crossed the city, many owners near Big Bend and Hanley are asking whether their original slate can be saved or must come off. For slate roofing that respects hand-cut stone, copper, and brick, call Top Quality Exteriors and we will inspect every slope slate by slate and give you a straight answer on repair versus replacement.

Slate work on a Richmond Heights home is part restoration, part careful new installation, and never a quick tear-off job, so expect patience. We replace cracked or slipped slates, renail with proper hooks and fasteners, rebuild failed valleys, and flash brick chimneys in copper. Where an original roof is spent, we install natural slate or a slate-look system matched to your brick and roofline. If you are weighing lighter alternatives, our metal roofing in Richmond Heights crew can compare options.

Signs Your Slate Roof Needs Work

  • Cracked, slipped, or missing slates showing bare underlayment
  • Rusted nails or failed copper flashing at brick chimneys
  • Ceiling stains or attic daylight showing beneath older slate

Slate Care for Richmond Heights

Slate rarely wears out first; the fasteners, flashing, and felt underneath do. On many Richmond Heights homes from the 1930s, the original nails have rusted through, so slates slip loose after a hard wind or a falling limb. The metro sees three to five significant hail events a year, and the May 2025 outbreak that brought the EF3 tornado also drove hail and falling limbs across steep Tudor planes. Freeze-thaw cycles then pry open any cracked slate and let water into plank or skip-sheathing. Our crews work from roof ladders and chicken boards so we never walk on fragile slate, and we sort salvaged pieces to reuse on visible slopes. Copper valleys, step flashing, and ridge pieces are rebuilt to last as long as the stone. Hampton Park and Berkshire owners often ask about matching, so we bring samples to your porch and compare them against your brick in daylight. Narrow streets and steep driveways shape how we stage salvaged slate and new pallets, so we plan that. For a smaller fix, see our tile roofing in Richmond Heights options too.

Our 5-Step Slate Process

Slate work should feel careful and predictable, not rushed. Our five steps protect your Richmond Heights home, its brick, and its historic roof from the first walkthrough to the last cleanup, with the crew lead checking every slope.

Slate Inspection

We check each slope by hand on a roof ladder and photograph cracks, slips, and rusted nails. You get a written report and honest repair-or-replace advice. The visit is free, too.

Material Match

We compare natural slate, salvaged pieces, and slate-look options against your roof. Samples come to your porch so you can judge color against your brick. You decide first, always.

Careful Removal

We lift old slates by hand, sort reusable ones, and tarp the brick below. Failed felt and weak plank decking get replaced as needed. Driveway staging stays tidy, safe, and planned.

Install and Flash

We lay underlayment and ice and water shield, then set each slate with proper fasteners. Copper flashing wraps every chimney and valley. Ridge pieces go on last and get sealed.

Final Walkthrough

We walk every slope with you, sweep the yard with a magnet, and review upkeep tips. You receive our 36-month workmanship warranty plus any manufacturer coverage on the materials.

Why Richmond Heights Trusts Us

Slate demands patience, and homeowners deserve a contractor with the credentials to match. We are a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, licensed in Missouri and Illinois, and our owner Mario Granados brings 7+ years of industry experience. Top Quality Exteriors was founded in 2022, and our team of 52+ members works Mid County storm seasons every year, from tight Tudor valleys to steep brick-lined driveways in this inner-ring city.

As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we offer manufacturer-backed options when a slate-look or shingle alternative suits the house. Every job carries our 36-month workmanship warranty, with up to lifetime coverage on selected products. We hold general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, pull permits through the Richmond Heights Building Department, and keep our 24/7 emergency line staffed for storm nights. Call (314) 618-8888 and ask for Mario.

Richmond Heights Slate Cost Guide

Slate costs more than any other roofing material, and the price depends on far more than square footage. Steep Tudor pitches, multiple dormers, copper flashing, and slow hand-set labor all raise the number. Plank or skip-sheathing may need repair once old slates come off, a cost that only shows after removal. We write every quote line by line before work begins, separate repair from replacement, and can route Hearth or GreenSky financing for qualified homeowners.

The payoff is a roof that can outlast the mortgage. Spot-restoring sound slate on a Hampton Park or Berkshire home often costs far less than a full tear-off, and it protects resale value tied to historic character. If budget points toward a different material, our residential roofing in Richmond Heights team will price asphalt or metal beside slate so you can compare. Either way, you will see real numbers in writing before you sign anything, and we answer every question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Slate runs well above asphalt and metal, and steep Richmond Heights Tudors with dormers and copper flashing cost more than a simple gable. Price depends on slate type, pitch, decking repair, and flashing. We inspect first, explain each line, and quote in writing, and offer Hearth or GreenSky financing when you qualify, so nothing surprises you later on.
Often yes. If most slates are sound, we replace broken pieces, renail slipped ones, and rebuild flashing, which costs far less than a new roof, and it keeps original character intact. The failing part is usually rusted nails and old felt, not the stone. We inspect by hand and tell you plainly whether repair still makes sense for your roof and budget.
Yes. The City of Richmond Heights Building Department requires a permit for a tear-off or re-roof, and the Building Commissioner’s office issues it. We handle the paperwork, calculate the fee set by the city’s ordinance schedule, and schedule the roof inspection the city calls for, so you never have to chase city hall or wait on permits at any stage.
Natural slate gives the longest life and the truest look on a historic brick Tudor, but it is heavy, and the framing must carry it. Slate-look systems weigh less and cost less while keeping the shadow lines. We check your framing, show samples against your brick, and help you choose without pushing one over the other. The final call is always yours.
Often yes when wind, hail, or falling limbs caused the damage, including from the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado. Missouri lets your contractor meet the adjuster, and we attend on the roof. We photograph broken slates, measure each slope, and write the scope in terms your carrier understands, so claims move faster and fewer items get missed along the way.
Quality natural slate can last a century or more, but copper, nails, and underlayment usually need attention sooner. Freeze-thaw cycles and hail speed up wear on weak spots. Yearly checks and prompt repairs after storms keep a Richmond Heights slate roof going far longer than most owners expect, often for generations of the same family. Slate rewards owners who stay on top of it.

I was referred by a relative, and I'm glad I asked. They did great work, communicated well about everything, and the one issue I had was addressed quickly and efficiently. I am glad that I went to this company. Not only would I use them again, I would refer them to friends and loved ones. Pleasant workers who work hard, and customer satisfaction is obviously a priority.

I am extremely grateful that I contacted Top Quality Exteriors for my projects. They did a great job, continuously kept me posted on the work with daily photos, and were timely and professional at a very competitive and fair price!! While other contractors were not interested in my relatively small projects (soffit and dormer repair), TQE came out the day I called to give me a bid. They also went above and beyond. I not only had soffit repair work needed, but a birds next was built into the soffit opening. After inspecting my soffit to provide a bid, Bryan, my TQE representative, asked me if I had a yard bag. He climbed back on the roof and removed the nest. He then used materials from his truck to go back up on the roof to close off the hole until it could be repaired. All this on a late Friday afternoon when most contractors would be looking to start their weekend. Because of this, the great quality work, and the friendly and professional employees, I will always contact Top Quality Exteriors for any future projects, large or small. I HIGHLY recommend them!!!!

The overall experience was great. Their responses are quick and detailed, and the images provided of the condition of the roof before, during, and after repair gave me confidence in the work that was being done. They did a thorough job of explaining the scope of work, including a change order that was required when additional damage was found to the sheathing of the roof. They were transparent about their pricing and were respectful throughout our interactions. Overall I’m satisfied, and hopeful that the quality of the work will show over time.
