Tile Roofing Experts in St. Louis, MO

Owning a Gingerbread home in Dutchtown or a Mediterranean-style bungalow near Tower Grove Park means your clay tile roof is part of the city’s architectural identity, and matching a cracked hip tile or resetting a slipped barrel tile is not a job for a general roofer. At Top Quality Exteriors, our tile roofing in St. Louis, MO focuses on the terracotta and concrete tile stock that sits on brick facades across South City neighborhoods like The Hill, Bevo Mill, and Holly Hills, plus the parapet-bounded flats that need custom flashing.

We install, repair, and re-lay clay, concrete, S-tile, and synthetic tile roofs on brick homes across the city, from Lafayette Square Victorians to Carondelet bungalows. Each project starts with a written scope, hidden valley metal in copper or painted steel, fresh underlayment, and hip and ridge mortar tuned to the existing tile color. If your home is in a local historic district, we coordinate the Preservation Board review before we pull a permit, and we pair every tile job with a full roof replacement option quote.

Why St. Louis Homes Choose Tile

  • Terracotta and concrete tile matched to your existing 1920s color
  • Copper valley metal and lead flashing on historic brick facades
  • Preservation Board coordination for local historic district homes

Clay Tile on Brick City Homes

Most tile roofs in the city sit on load-bearing red brick built between the 1890s and the late 1930s, a housing stock shaped by the Cheltenham Syncline clay deposits that once made St. Louis one of the country’s biggest brick producers. That heritage shows up in the Gingerbread homes of South City, the Spanish Revival bungalows scattered through Bevo Mill and The Hill, and the occasional Mediterranean-style rowhouse near Lafayette Square. Working on those roofs means respecting original decking, undersized ventilation, and layered-over underlayment. Our crews strip back to sound sheathing, lay a self-adhering ice and water shield, install a synthetic high-temp underlayment, then set battens and tile to the exact exposure the original installer used. We coordinate with residential roofing work like fascia repair, dormer flashing, gutter tie-in, and cornice tuckpointing, so one crew leaves the site weather-tight and matches the historic profile end to end.

Our 5-Step Tile Process

Tile work on a century-old St. Louis brick home is not a shingle job, so our process is built around careful diagnosis, honest matching, and historic-district permitting. Here is exactly how we handle every tile roof from Soulard to Carondelet.

Free Tile Survey

We walk your roof, photograph every cracked or slipped tile, and check all the flashings. You get a written report with clear pictures. There is no charge and no pressure at all.

Match the Tile

We identify the profile, color, and maker, then hunt salvage or a modern equal. On synthetic tile jobs, we sample two brands side by side. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.

Pull Permits

We file the City Building Division permit for you, and if your street is historic, we submit to the Preservation Board first. You never chase a form. We do the paperwork ourselves.

Install Tile

Crews strip to sound decking, lay ice and water shield, set battens, and place each tile. Copper valleys and lead pipe flashings go in fresh. Ridge tiles are mortared to match.

Cleanup Walk

We magnet-sweep the yard twice, haul all the debris, and walk the finished roof with you. You get our 36-month workmanship warranty in writing plus manufacturer tile coverage.

Why St. Louis Trusts Our Crews

Tile roofing is a small slice of the St. Louis market, so most contractors treat it as a side skill. We do not. Our lead tile mechanic has spent years hand-cutting hips and ridges on Spanish Revival homes near Tower Grove Park and re-laying Gingerbread roofs in Dutchtown after hail. Founded in 2022 and backed by over seven years of exterior experience, our team knows how brick moves through freeze-thaw and where a hip mortar joint will leak into interior plaster.

We hold a BBB A+ rating, carry Missouri and Illinois licenses, and cover every project with general liability and workers’ compensation insurance. On Victorian mansion stock in Lafayette Square where natural slate roofing and tile sit side by side, we submit proposed materials to the Preservation Board before pulling a permit. Every tile roof is backed by our 36-month workmanship warranty, with extended coverage on qualifying synthetic tile.

Tile Roof Cost in St. Louis, MO

Tile roofing costs more up front than asphalt, but it lasts 50 to 100 years on a St. Louis brick home if installed correctly, so the price per year of service is often lower. Full clay tile replacement on a typical South City bungalow generally runs from the high teens to the mid thirties in thousands, depending on pitch, tile profile, dormer count, and how much of the original decking has to be replaced during a full tear-off.

Synthetic clay tile costs meaningfully less than natural terracotta and works well for Mediterranean-style homes near Bevo Mill or The Hill that still want the reproduction look on the street. We offer Hearth and GreenSky financing for qualified homeowners, and after the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado we handled many insurance-funded tile roof replacements. On storm claims, we attend the adjuster meeting and document every cracked tile against the Xactimate scope of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tile roof replacement on a typical South City brick home runs from the high teens to the mid thirties in thousands, depending on pitch, tile profile, decking condition, and dormer count. Synthetic tile options cost noticeably less. Individual broken tile repairs usually land between four hundred and eighteen hundred dollars based on roof access and how many tiles are cracked.
Yes. The St. Louis City Building Division requires a permit for any tile roof replacement or material change, and same-material repairs above 25 percent of the decking also need one. Homes located in local historic districts also need Cultural Resources Office approval before a permit is issued, and we handle both filings for you at no extra charge.
Usually yes. We first pull attic-stored salvage tile from your home if any exists at all. If not, we identify the original manufacturer and profile, then source matching clay tile from national salvage yards or a modern replacement equivalent. Synthetic clay tile is also available in accurate reproduction colors if the original is discontinued now.
A properly installed natural clay tile roof lasts 75 to 100 years on a St. Louis brick facade. Concrete tile lasts 50 to 75 years, and quality synthetic tile carries fifty-year manufacturer warranties. Underlayment and flashing usually need replacement at year 30 to 40 before the tile field itself has failed, so budget for that separately at midlife.
Yes. We regularly work on tile roofs in local historic districts like Soulard, Lafayette Square, and Compton Heights in the city. We submit our proposed tile color, ridge treatment, and flashing metal to the St. Louis Preservation Board for approval before we pull a permit, so the paperwork never delays your project or triggers a stop work order later on.
Usually yes. Missouri homeowners policies typically cover hail and wind damage to tile roofs, and the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado triggered many funded claims across the city. Missouri also gives you a 12-month claim filing window. We attend the adjuster meeting with you and document every cracked or displaced tile in the full Xactimate scope of work.

I was referred by a relative, and I'm glad I asked. They did great work, communicated well about everything, and the one issue I had was addressed quickly and efficiently. I am glad that I went to this company. Not only would I use them again, I would refer them to friends and loved ones. Pleasant workers who work hard, and customer satisfaction is obviously a priority.

I am extremely grateful that I contacted Top Quality Exteriors for my projects. They did a great job, continuously kept me posted on the work with daily photos, and were timely and professional at a very competitive and fair price!! While other contractors were not interested in my relatively small projects (soffit and dormer repair), TQE came out the day I called to give me a bid. They also went above and beyond. I not only had soffit repair work needed, but a birds next was built into the soffit opening. After inspecting my soffit to provide a bid, Bryan, my TQE representative, asked me if I had a yard bag. He climbed back on the roof and removed the nest. He then used materials from his truck to go back up on the roof to close off the hole until it could be repaired. All this on a late Friday afternoon when most contractors would be looking to start their weekend. Because of this, the great quality work, and the friendly and professional employees, I will always contact Top Quality Exteriors for any future projects, large or small. I HIGHLY recommend them!!!!

The overall experience was great. Their responses are quick and detailed, and the images provided of the condition of the roof before, during, and after repair gave me confidence in the work that was being done. They did a thorough job of explaining the scope of work, including a change order that was required when additional damage was found to the sheathing of the roof. They were transparent about their pricing and were respectful throughout our interactions. Overall I’m satisfied, and hopeful that the quality of the work will show over time.
