Emergency Roof Tarping in St. Louis, MO

When a storm rips shingles off your Dutchtown two-flat or peels open a parapet-bound flat roof in Soulard, water starts spalling interior brick and soaking plaster within hours. Top Quality Exteriors runs a 24/7 Emergency Response line for emergency roof tarping in St. Louis so a crew shuts the leak down before your finishes and framing go with the roof deck itself. After the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado tore roofs off roughly 5,000 city homes in one afternoon, that speed stops being a marketing line and becomes the difference between a repair and a gut.

Our tarps are heavy-duty 6-mil poly, fastened with lath strips and ring-shank nails, sandbagged along the parapet, and lapped to shed water past torn membrane or missing shingles. Once the leak is stopped, we scope the permanent repair with you and coordinate the storm damage roofing in St. Louis claim from the same visit. Every truck carries roll roofing, plastic cement, step flashing, and a moisture meter so we can log interior readings for your adjuster and mark hidden pockets right there.

What Fast Tarping Stops Cold

  • Water spalling brick, plaster ceilings, and mortar joints
  • Insulation saturation that drops R-value and grows mold fast
  • Decking rot, joist failure, and drywall bulges along the ceiling

Built for St. Louis Roofs

Tarping a flat roof behind a brick parapet in Tower Grove East is a different animal from tarping a pitched gable in Holly Hills, and our crews handle both every storm season. On the low-slope side, we anchor the tarp above the coping stones so wind cannot lift the leading edge, run sandbags along the parapet, and detail the field lap so runoff clears the scupper or drain instead of pooling behind the wall. On pitched brick bungalows in Bevo Mill and The Hill, we fasten through lath strips into sound decking, avoid brittle 1920s slate where it still holds, and keep the tarp taut so ice storms and freeze-thaw cycles do not chatter fasteners loose overnight. Every dispatch carries roll roofing, plastic cement, and step flashing on the truck for interim emergency roof repair in St. Louis where a tarp alone will not hold. When the May 2025 tornado hit Fountain Park and The Ville, we were staging tarps out of the shop by dawn and coordinating with adjusters on-site.

Our 5-Step Tarping Process

When you call our after-hours line, we move fast, document everything for your carrier, and treat your home like the leak is in our own basement. Here is exactly how a St. Louis tarping call unfolds from first ring to a dry ceiling.

24/7 Dispatch

We answer the emergency line day or night, grab your address, and roll a truck within the hour. I confirm roof type and access before we leave. Your ETA hits your phone en route.

Damage Triage

On site, we walk the roof, mark torn membrane, missing shingles, and punctured decking. I photograph parapet coping failures for the file. Tarp square footage is sized right there.

Tarp Install

We lay 6-mil poly with a shed lap above the failure, screw lath strips through the tarp into sound decking, and sandbag every parapet edge. Ring-shank nails hold on pitched roofs.

Interior Check

Once the exterior is dry, we walk top-floor ceilings, attic decking, and wet plaster for hidden pockets. I mark drywall bulges and log moisture readings for the claim file today.

Repair Scope

Before the truck rolls, we hand you a scoped estimate for permanent repair or a full replacement build. I coordinate with your adjuster and set the follow-up meeting on the spot.

Why St. Louis Trusts Our Crews

Top Quality Exteriors is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, licensed in Missouri and Illinois, and backed by 7+ years of industry experience across the St. Louis metro area. Our 52+ team members carry general liability and workers compensation on every truck, which matters when a crew is walking a wet brick parapet at 2 a.m. in Fountain Park after a straight-line wind event has stripped the neighborhood roof-first without any warning.

We hold Owens Corning Preferred Contractor status and are a James Hardie Alliance Program Member, so when a tarp turns into a full replacement, product warranties stay intact from the moment the crew lands on your roof deck. Every workmanship job we finish carries a 36-Month baseline warranty, with extended coverage up to Lifetime on select systems, and our tarping documentation folds straight into your storm damage restoration in St. Louis claim file.

What St. Louis Tarping Costs

Emergency tarping in the city typically runs $1,000 to $2,000 depending on roof pitch, total square footage, and how many parapet edges need sandbagging on a two-flat, rowhouse, or brick bungalow. Non-emergency board-ups scheduled inside normal business hours land roughly 40% below that, since we are not paying a crew overtime to hit a Lafayette Square address at midnight during peak hail and tornado season here in the metro.

The good news is that most homeowner policies cover emergency tarping as loss mitigation, since it prevents a much larger interior claim from mold growth, decking rot, or plaster loss. We document every step with photos, moisture readings, and a written scope so your adjuster approves the mitigation line without any pushback. A tarp buys you roughly two weeks of dry time — enough to line up permanent repair, materials, and permits with the City Building Division here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our 24/7 Emergency Response line dispatches a crew within the hour for city addresses, and most tarps are secured within two to four hours of your call. After the May 16, 2025 EF3 tornado, we ran overlapping crews across South City and North City to keep pace with the volume. Weather and roof access can shift that window, but we always call with an ETA before we roll out.
Most Missouri homeowner policies cover emergency tarping as loss mitigation, because it prevents a much larger interior claim from water intrusion. We document the storm damage with photos, moisture readings, and a written scope so your adjuster can approve the mitigation line item cleanly. Save every receipt, and file the claim inside the 12-month Missouri window.
A properly installed 6-mil tarp with lath strips, ring-shank nails, and sandbagged parapet edges holds up for roughly two weeks in typical Missouri weather. Summer sun, hail, and freeze-thaw cycles chew through poly faster, so we plan permanent repair inside that window. If materials or the adjuster stall, we can reset the tarp so your home stays sealed until the crew starts.
Yes, and it is the majority of what we tarp in Soulard, Dutchtown, and Tower Grove. We anchor the tarp above the coping stones so wind cannot lift the leading edge, run sandbags along the parapet, and detail the field lap so runoff clears the scupper or drain. Coping mortar failures get flagged for permanent repair before water spalls the interior brick below.
Temporary emergency measures like tarping do not require the same over-the-counter permit that a full re-roof needs from the City Building Division. Historic districts can add a Preservation Board layer once permanent work begins, especially in Soulard, Lafayette Square, and The Ville. We flag every district constraint during the tarping visit so nothing surprises the permanent repair timeline.
We run emergency tarping across every city neighborhood, from Carondelet and Holly Hills in the south to Fountain Park and The Ville in the north, plus the Central Corridor around Forest Park. Our crews know the tight lot access, alley staging, and party-wall parapets on Cherokee, Gravois, and Grand corridor rowhouses. Call the after-hours line and we will roll.

I was referred by a relative, and I'm glad I asked. They did great work, communicated well about everything, and the one issue I had was addressed quickly and efficiently. I am glad that I went to this company. Not only would I use them again, I would refer them to friends and loved ones. Pleasant workers who work hard, and customer satisfaction is obviously a priority.

I am extremely grateful that I contacted Top Quality Exteriors for my projects. They did a great job, continuously kept me posted on the work with daily photos, and were timely and professional at a very competitive and fair price!! While other contractors were not interested in my relatively small projects (soffit and dormer repair), TQE came out the day I called to give me a bid. They also went above and beyond. I not only had soffit repair work needed, but a birds next was built into the soffit opening. After inspecting my soffit to provide a bid, Bryan, my TQE representative, asked me if I had a yard bag. He climbed back on the roof and removed the nest. He then used materials from his truck to go back up on the roof to close off the hole until it could be repaired. All this on a late Friday afternoon when most contractors would be looking to start their weekend. Because of this, the great quality work, and the friendly and professional employees, I will always contact Top Quality Exteriors for any future projects, large or small. I HIGHLY recommend them!!!!

The overall experience was great. Their responses are quick and detailed, and the images provided of the condition of the roof before, during, and after repair gave me confidence in the work that was being done. They did a thorough job of explaining the scope of work, including a change order that was required when additional damage was found to the sheathing of the roof. They were transparent about their pricing and were respectful throughout our interactions. Overall I’m satisfied, and hopeful that the quality of the work will show over time.
